A rare 18th Century English Staffordshire Agateware
Candlestick with Corinthian Bronze and Brass Mounts.
This lovely 18th C. Agateware Candlestick was introduced in England about 1730.
The English Potter Thomas Whieldon improved the
process by using white clays stained various colors.
Repeated mixing of different layers of color,
often brown, white, soft yellows, or blues creates
the striking striated marbling effect throughout.
The objects were polished after firing to give them their glossy finish
Creating such controlled translucent marbling, as seen in our candlestick,
exemplified this technique. The best agateware objects are extremely rare.
The pediment is stepped sheet brass over cast iron.
The Corinthian capital appears to be bronze,
finishing with a candle socket.
