1757 Worcester Porcelain Lidded Tea Caddy "smoky primitive" by Robert Hancock

We are offering a lovely rare 18th c. antique porcelain lidded tea caddy from The Worcester Porcelain Co. England This early over glaze print was known as "smoky primitives" Transfer printed design by Robert Hancock. This lovely porcelain tea caddy shows a Shepherd with his dog , watching his sheep grazing in a meadow Floral design borders all transferred with the smoky glaze over white porcelain. There is an overall panel design on both the caddy and the lid. Hancock became an accomplished engraver, in 1756-57 he joined the Worcester Porcelain Company, where Josiah Holdship, one of the early partners, had been instrumental in developing printed decoration. It is said that the earliest over glaze prints, known as ‘smoky primitives were produced at Worcester With Hancock’s arrival, the factory then had access to one of the country’s finest ceramic engravers and their production of printed ware was brought to a high degree of perfection. Transfer printing refers to a technique developed around 1752 of transferring an engraved design directly onto the ceramic object, thereby allowing greater consistency, accuracy, and legibility in firing decorated wares. Condition: Overall very good condition for being over 250 years old. ] Minor chips along the bottom rim from use & natural wear. One chip on the caddy rim and a few chips on the lid. No cracks or repairs. This is a beautiful & rare piece still retaining it's original lid.
