13th - 14th Century Indonesian Bronze Zodiac Beaker / Bowl, Southeast Asia
We are offering...
an ancient bronze Zodiac beaker possibly of the Majapahit empire in Southeast
Asia. This bowl displays shallow relief of a row of zodiac symbols and another
row of figures above it. The identity of the top row of figures still remains
uncertain. This beaker/bowl functioned in ritual worship as a vessel for holy water
for Hindu-Buddhist practice.
"Majapahit was one of the last major Hindu empires of the region and is
considered to be one of the greatest and most powerful empires in the history
of Indonesia and Southeast Asia, one that is sometimes seen as the precedent
for Indonesia's modern boundaries."
