Late 18th-Ea.19th c. Traveling Tea Caddy Inlaid with Exotic Woods, Original Liners, Handles
We are offering a rare Traveling English Tea Caddy complete with two lid inserts, original lining, and handles from the late 18th/19thc.
"Caddy"
was the word first applied to small containers used to hold tea in the
18th century. Made of porcelain, silver, copper, brass, pewter,
tortoiseshell, ivory or wood, they were exported from China into England
as tea service grew in popularity.
In
the late 18th century, larger tea caddies were made. Wood became the
most popular of materials, decorative elements applied and inlaid with
exotic woods. Caddy design was a larger box with hinged lid and a lock,
fitted with lidded compartments for storing tea, sugar and serving ware, and a handle for carrying; this became an innovative way of having tea service, particularly convenient for travel and visiting friends and family.
During
the 18th and 19th centuries, tea-drinking rituals had become an
important aspect of the English lifestyle, and services practiced as
such, reaching a high degree of artistic refinement.
