1820’s English Regency Cheval Screen, Three Panel Adjustable Fireplace Screen, Mahogany The screen has adjustable mahogany framed horizontal panels fitted with silk inserts and original brass castors. The fire screen began as a form of furniture that acted as a shield between the occupants of a room and the fireplace. The primary function was to reduce the discomfort of excessive heat from a log fire. Early firescreens were generally shaped as flat panels standing on attached feet. These screens were in common use from the 18th century into the mid 19th century. This is a wide screen having two feet on each side, the arrangement of the feet giving the screen its name; Cheval. Screens were used for their decorative appearance when placed in front of the unused fireplace. This screen was meant to improve the appearance of a room. Dimensions: compact length - 22" extended length - 56" frame width - 2 3/4" base width - 19 1/2" height - 45" Condition: Age related condition. Minor surface scratches throughout the wood.
