We are offering a Victorian Staffordshire Figure of a sailor from the 19th century, circa 1850s. This sailor, brightly colored and hand painted, stands prominently on an oval base and is fully detailed ‘in the round’.

Staffordshire Figurines are part of collective figurative glazed stoneware works made in Staffordshire, England, from the 18th century onward. The earliest of these figures date back to the 1740s. In later decades, works were produced as lead-glazed earthenware, allowing for more colors and details. Among these figures included themes of music, animals, classical deities, portraits and of important persons, such as George Washington and Queen Victoria. 

Some of the most well known and popular with affluent society were the Staffordshire figures of military and naval nature, such as the one in this very listing.
