1800s Spanish Hispano-Moresque Majolica Charger, Cobalt Blue & Copper Lustre, Spain We are offering a Hispano-Moresque charger from 19th century Spain, designed by hand in Colbalt Blue and Copper Lustre. Hispano-Moresque earthenware first emerged out of the 15th century, created by Moorish potters in Malaga, Spain and became more well known in the region of Manises, near Valencia by the 16th century. After the hand forming of each charger, the glaze would be applied over a design traced in cobalt blue. After the first firing, a metallic pigment would be brushed over the glaze and the piece fired once more. Originally, the designs of each charger were primarily Islamic, including the tree of life, foliage motifs and Arabic inscriptions. Chargers created in later years included design elements of the Italian Renaissance as well as the Islamic themes. Copper luster was also used during this time in the creation of these pieces, as the one shown in this very listing. Condition: This rare and unusual charger is in very good condition with minor fretting the some of the copper glazed edges.
