A beautiful rare Sterling Silver and frosted cut glass grape stand,
dated 1849 custom made by the English silversmith Edward James Pairpoint
for the Harrow School in London, founded 1572.
This grape stand comes apart in three pieces, separating the silver rim,
the cut glass bowl, and the silver stand.
We've included a pair of late 19th century silver plate grape shears, FREE.
There are two armorial crests on the base. One reads
"Stet Fortuna Domus" and has a Lion with two crossed
arrows above it. THIS IS THE CREST OF THE HARROW SCHOOL.
The Harrow School is an English independent boarding school for
boys in Harrow on the Hill, Greater London, England.
The school was founded in 1572 by John Lyon, a local landowner
and farmer, under a Royal Charter of Queen Elizabeth I.
Harrow's history and influence have made it one of the
most prestigious schools in the world.
This piece has the 1849 London sterling silver hallmarks, with a
letter "O" date letter, and the leopard's head, lion passant and the duty mark.
The "EP" hallmark is the makers markof he London silversmith Edward Pairpoint.
Every removable part is hallmarked. It has these marks on the sterling rim,
the stem and under the base.
The firm was founded in 1848 by Edward James Pairpoint.
In an 1898 book written by John Henry Cardwell the firm is quoted:
...'Pairpoint copies of ancient patterns are dangerously near being
indistinguishable from the originals, whilst their new manufactures
carry one back to the days when the master silversmiths employed
the first artists of the day to assist them in their productions
"devised in love and fashioned cunningly." The firm is principally
known to the trade as manufacturers of large and important works,
such as centre pieces, presentation vases, and the like.
