This Silver wine tasting cup or Tastevin
is engraved with the inscription Picot Nuits 1791

on both the handle

BornAugust 19, 1756, Paris,
Auguste Marie Henri Picot de Dampierre, styled the Marquis de Dampierre 
and usually known as Dampierre, 
he was a French general during the time of the French Revolution. 
He served in many of the early battles of the War of the First Coalition.
 At the battle of Valmy , he commanded division of the army of Dumouriez , 
but he became famous for his exploits at the Battle of Jemappes
Marching at the head of the Flanders regiment and battalion of Paris volunteers , 
he attacked six enemy battalions threatening Beurnonville and
aiding Beurnonville 's successful advance. 

 

He died in Valenciennes in 1793 .
