A late 19th c. to early 20th c. Japanese Imari Porcelain and Pewter Tea Caddy. It is a very nice piece in white Porcelain with the image depicted in a soft flowing blue. It comes with both original Pewter Caps and has the artists mark seen in blue on the bottom of the Tea Caddy.
The scene shows a small boat moving under the shadow of a tree and out onto the lake towards the far shore in the distance. The influence of Japanese Zen Buddhism in Porcelain designs is seen in the use of the empty spaces between the tree and the far shore. This technique allows the mind to fill the void with what should be seen. Another Zen aspect is contrasting the smallness of the man in relation to the grandness of nature that is surrounding him in the image.
