a 19th C. French Bronze of a Pointer dog looking down at a lizard amongst the foliage,
on a shaped base, with hand cut square nuts on the underside.
This piece is signed "Susse Fres - B" On the back lower left,
and is from the Susse Freres Foundry. This piece can firmly be attributed to Jules Moigniez,
based on similarities in style and other versions of this bronze attributed to him.
The National Sporting Library & Museum in Virginia has a life size variation of this
Pointer bronze on their grounds.
Moigniez was one of the earliest artists to work with Susse Freres.
The Susse Frères firm was established in 1839 by brothers
Michel Victor Susse and Amedee Susse, who set up a foundry in Paris.
The company was famous for producing exceptionally cast bronzes,
which often featured impressively applied patinas.
In addition to works of sculpture, Susse Frères made delicate parts for furniture and clocks,
collaborating with several French sculptors to produce refined designs.
