The wood structure of this fan in finely hand-painted.
(In Jan 1898, Maine was sent from Key West FL. to Havana, Cuba, to protect U.S. interests during the Cuban war of independence.
three weeks later an explosion on board the Maine occurred. 5 tons of powder charges for the vessels six and ten inch guns had detonated obliterating the forward 3rd of the ship.
The wreckage settled at the bottom of the Havana harbor and would rest there until 1912 when it was raised.)
