Red & Gold decorated Japanned Wood Tray with figures, animals and flowers.
Japanning was used To keep up with the demand for lacquered pieces,
English craftsmen and artists imitated the lacquer by painting
their own pieces in a process known as Japanning.
First appearing in the 17th century, this trend was popularized in the 18th to early 19th c. due to the rise in trade with China (during the High Qing era) and the rest of East Asia.
