Rare 19th Century American Folk Art Hand Painted Slide Lid Pencil Box from New England
We are offering
a rare and whimsical Early American, hand painted slide lid pencil box, made in New England.
This is a great piece of American folk art. Painted on the sliding lid are quaint houses and trees.
All sides are painted with a lovely faux-grain wood pattern, imitating mahogany in a rich red
hue, created by pressing their thumbs onto the still drying paint, in fact, you can see a thumb
print in one of the photos.
The entire piece, aside from the lid, is carved out of one solid piece of pine, as can be seen in
the hollowed-out inside compartment where the pencil would be kept. This would be a great
addition to any early American folk art collection.
Please keep in mind the photos have some degree of glare.
