A very early c. 1830's painting of an elderly lady in remembrance of a loved one. In this Watercolor / Gouache painting The Lady is sitting quietly at a table in the Water powered Grain Mill. (Noted by the grain dust on her clothing) Reading her Bible and remembering her loved one. On the table next to her are her glasses case, a Skull, and a bell. The most common symbolic use of the skull is as a representation of death, mortality and the unachievable nature of immortality. The Bell on the table would be used to end the prayers. This is a lovely very old painting with a Religious significance.
